Q: Dear Daron,
I’m noticing patches of brown spots on my skin (mostly on my face, chest, and backs of my hands). Feeling like it’s coming out of nowhere all the sudden! Any thoughts on what’s causing it? What the best treatments are? I need advice please!
Thanks!
Gently Curious
Dear Curious,
Great question! Discoloration like this is known as hyperpigmentation. There are generally two root causes— I’ll explain!
The good news? Every formula I’ve developed in the EarthTonics line is specially curated with brightening herbs. ‘Cause let’s be real, no matter your age or skin type, it’s something most people struggle with at some point. We all could use a little support to keep our skin radiant and even-toned ;-)
First, let me explain the two root causes of hyperpigmentation I see most often:
Root Cause #1: INFLAMMATION
Breakouts, sunburns, or harsh products can trigger your skin to produce extra melanin (pigment) as a form of protection. Or, if your body is dealing with toxic overload or excessive stress, you might have some general full body inflammation happening. This will make your skin more susceptible to these kinds of skin issues.
Root Cause #2: HORMONAL SHIFTS
Pregnancy, birth control, or stress can disrupt your skin’s hormonal pigment pathways, leading to stubborn dark patches, sometimes called melasma.
SOLUTIONS:
CALM INFLAMMATION TOPICALLY
As I mentioned, EarthTonics products are FULL of brightening herbs, but none compare to the anti-inflammatory powerhouse that is our Immortelle Mushroom Mylk. Use this twice a day to see the best results. Potent mushrooms + herbs like Helichrysum, Licorice Root and Uva Ursi drastically calm inflammation and target damaged areas. It’s like a chill pill for the melanin-producing cells that are on overdrive.
BOOST SKIN CELL TURNOVER + BE CONSISTENT
Healing discoloration takes time, as new skin cells must regenerate, lift and replace the dark ones. Each layer happens about every moon cycle in healthy adults, and as we get older (or more stressed out) it can slow. Boost skin cell turnover by getting plenty of sleep, reducing stress, and adding in topicals with ingredients that supercharge regeneration, like our Repair Creme Concentrate. Made with Carrot Seed, Tamanu Oil, and Calendula it helps to heal discoloration rapidly. I love it layered over the Mushroom Mylk, especially at night.
DETOX FROM WITHIN
If your internal systems are overloaded with toxins, or simply not getting the nutrients or hydration they need, you’ll absolutely see it reflected in your skin, often as dull, lackluster tone, and sometimes increased dark spots. Brighten your skin immediately by eliminating alcohol and processed sugars and adding in more nutrient dense fruits and vegetables, especially those high in Vitamin C. Drink plenty of water and herbal teas (my favs for brightening are Chinese Licorice, Nettle, Hibiscus and Rooibos).
BALANCE HORMONES
In cases of pregnancy, hormones naturally shift, and restore with time. Be patient and nourish yourself internally and externally with the suggestions above.
If pregnancy is not a factor, consider visiting a naturopath who can order hormone panels and give more specific advice on your current health and hormone balance. Often much can be achieved through simple supplementation of amino acids or via seed cycling (eating specific seeds throughout different parts of your cycle to balance hormones.)
EXFOLIATE, BUT GENTLY
Trust me, this is not the time for drastic measures! Resist any urges or ads for aggressive exfoliating peels or treatments as these can greatly exacerbate discoloration. Exfoliate away dead skin cells daily with our enzymatic Cardamom Cream Cleanser, and gently polish skin 1-2x a week with a brightening treatment like our Honey + Bamboo Facial Scrub to stimulate cell turnover and infuse hydrating and illuminating botanicals like Wild Yam, Rose Geranium and Chaga Mushroom.
BE MINDFUL OF HEAT + SUN EXPOSURE
If your skin is inflamed, it’s “on guard” and will be more sensitive to excessive sun exposure and heat, feeling it as a threat rather than a friend. Get your sunshine in the early and late hours of the day, and wear a hat and sunscreen if you’ll be in the sun for extended periods of time or midday. Follow the steps above and trust your skin will metabolize sunlight better when it’s getting the topical anti-inflammatories and internal nutrients it needs.
I sure hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions!
